Exercises

The first four exercises focus on measurements of distances in the Universe, one of the most basic problems in modern astrophysics. The students apply different methods to determine the distance of astronomical objects such as the supernova SN 1987A, the spiral galaxy Messier 100, the Cat's Eye Planetary Nebula globular cluster Messier 12. Exercises 6 and 7 are newly added. The former is about the black hole at the Galactic Centre, whereas the latter is a new edition of exercise 2 where students are supposed to make their own measurements using a freely available photometry software package.
